Brad Boakes
Director, Smart Start Interlocks
Brad Boakes is the Director of Smart Start Interlocks, New Zealand's largest alcohol interlock provider. The team is based in Maungaturoto and has fitted more than 20,000 interlocks through a network of over 95 service centres since 2013.
Brad writes about the practical side of the interlock programme, like how the devices work, what happens at a monthly service, and why everyday things like bread and mouthwash can set off a reading. He also writes about alcohol and drug testing in the Family Court, where Smart Start's remote monitoring services, Smart Mobile and Smart Breath, are used.
Like the rest of the team, Brad has had an interlock fitted to his own car, so he knows what clients go through day to day.
Brad is passionate about interlocks and the positive impact they can have on people's lives and on road safety. He works with NZTA and MCERT where he can to improve the interlock programme for the people who go through it.
